How to draw a Diamond (Top view)

A diamond's top view is not just a geometric marvel—it's a great exercise in symmetry, radial balance, and precision. This tutorial will walk you through creating a sparkling diamond from a top-down perspective. By the end, you’ll not only have a beautiful drawing, but also a transparent, luminous effect using clever coloring techniques. You can also use this diamond drawing to create your custom digital procreate brush.

Pencil and eraser

Ruler or compass

Drawing paper

Colored pencils or watercolor (with 8 shades of the same color)

White pen or pastel for highlights

Instructions

Step 1: Divide Your Page into Four Equal Parts

Start by drawing a horizontal and vertical line that intersect at the center of your page. This creates four equal quadrants and helps with symmetry.

Step 2: Draw a Circle

Using a compass (or by hand), draw a circle centered where the lines intersect. This will be the outer boundary of your diamond.

Step 3: Divide into 8 Equal Parts

Now divide the circle further by drawing two diagonal lines (45° angles) through the center. You should now have 8 equal segments.

Step 4: Lightly Divide into 12 Parts

Next, draw 4 more faint guidelines to divide the 8 segments into 12 equal parts total. These lines should be very light—they are only guides and will be erased later.

Step 5: Draw 8 Diamond Shapes

In this step, skip every alternate division line and draw 8 elongated diamond shapes that connect these points. Each diamond should touch the outer edge of the circle.

Step 6: Connect the Bottom Points

Join the bottom points of the 8 diamonds to form a neat inner triangle. This gives structure and depth to your top view.

Step 7: Erase the Guidelines

Carefully erase the light lines drawn in Step 4, leaving only the diamond shapes and the triangle. This completes your basic top view of a diamond.

Step 8: Draw the Inner Facets for a Transparent Look

To give the diamond a sparkling, transparent look, find the points between the diamonds on the circle’s edge (those not used in Step 5). Draw lines from each of these points toward the center, but slightly offset so they meet just before the exact center.

Coloring the Diamond:

Step 9: Choose 8 Gradient Shades

Select eight shades of the same color (e.g., from light blue to deep blue). Begin coloring each block or facet in a gradient pattern, rotating around the circle to give a shimmering effect.

Step 10: Highlight the Center

In the central octagonal space, use a light white or transparent shade to suggest light reflection. You can blend it softly with surrounding colors to create a realistic sparkle.

Final Touches:

  • Add a tiny white highlight on a few facets for extra brilliance.

  • You can outline the facets with a fine liner for a crisp finish.

  • Consider using metallic gel pens or shimmer paint for added glow.
